Compressed Air Testing Solution

What would be the best, simplest route on compressed air validation testing for our plant?  Looking up the code, it is not specific in terms of method and frequencies or even limits for that matter.

I just read yesterday that you can swab the inline water trap.  Anyone have any advice on this?  We are also looking for a "simple" solution if there is such a thing.

use internal test method of observation

clean the air nozzle with a cloth

using clean white cloth, cover the nozzle and spray the air for  60 seconds

check the cloth for any presence of moisture/ dirt

use the following to collect air samples - blow on the agar for at least 10seconds; be gentle and don't blow off the agar..

Yeast and Mould (PDA plate)

Aerobic Plate counts (TSA Plates)

 I hope this helps

try thread below and sub-links to see what SQF expects - not a SQFer myself but it seems largely up to you to (a) show yr set-up matches their basic theoretical requirements re dimensions / performance specs and (b) for practical validation that system can achieve some required microbiological plate values which are, from various posts here, basically arbitrary maxima, eg obtained from a lab/reference perhaps.

Hello memnoch1974-

You are correct in that there is not much direction from SQF on what they would like tested, limits, etc. Much of it would be based on your final product. Charles left a link for you that talks in depth about micro contaminants.

I would suggest starting with Particle, Water, and Oil testing first unless your auditor has told you they want to see micro testing specifically. Or unless you know your product is prone to micro contaminants. That being said, since there are no firm guidelines from SQF as you stated, I want to be clear that whichever testing you do, PWO or micro, the auditor could say they want the other or they want both! Doing both types of testing is really the safest way to make sure you have conducted all of the compressed air testing they may want to see results for.  I am going to point you to our SQF page for testing. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. I can also email you info, just let me know how I can help you. Either way we offer step by step training materials available online. https://www.aircheck...qf-air-purity/

My understanding of SQF terms:

PRP = prerequisite program that describes who, how and when you will control any hazards in your compressed air supply.  Record all the activities for changing filters or other cleaning.

Monitoring = doing the test to check if OK or not.  Taking corrective action if not OK.

Verifying = someone else checks that the testing is being done per schedule.

Validating = using trend charts to show that you are maintaining control (all is OK or corrective/preventative action to maintain better control).

Yeast and Mold testing is for all air in the plant.

Oil testing is for compressed air supply.
