How to determine shelf life of PET/PE plastic bags?
Hi,
Weuse PET/PE plastics bags to put feeds. Unfortunately our local supplier cannot propose a shelf life. Can anyone help?

Again if you have a different question than the original poster please start a new thread for your question so that the original question and thread do not get mixed up between posts.
I would guess that we would need to know more about your bags to truly be able to answer your question like the thickness of the bags, composition, etc. I'm not a packaging expert however.

The life of these products can be quite long. More often the more relevant question is how long do you want to track it? Also if you keep packaging on hand for years on end can you be sure it has not been contaminated and has been properly handled during the entire time. The best solution is determine the length of time you want to track, recall and keep documentation based on the regulations for your country, the countries it may be going to and your customers requirements.
Obviously, shelf life of the packaging is different than shelf life of the packaged product. We guarantee our packaging products for "x" number of months and we call that our shelf life, even thought it is longer than that. But this is for the packaging material, not for the packaged product.
Shelf life of the product in the bags would involve doing actual shelf life testing of packaged product. The shelf life of the packaged product will depend on how much fat, oils and other ingredients are present that degrade with exposure to oxygen, water, heat, light, etc. Since your supplier doesn't know your formulation, it is almost impossible to state a shelf life for the product without doing shelf life studies.

Do you have data of WVTR ( water Vapour Transfer Rate) and O2TR ( Oxygen Transfer Rate), ? Those usefull to predict your product shelf life.

Better conduct accelerated stability test which require stability chamber, if not there in your lab, get the stability test done from an external lab. The test is quite expensive.
Real time stability can be conducted but it takes too long time (may not be for meat products). Try once.
and also i agree with AS NUT, WVTR and OTR is required for the determination of shelf life of product. But its theoretical one.
