Food Grade Sodium Acid Metaphosphate

Hey all,

In Japan there is a variation of sodium metaphosphate that is referred to as sodium acid metaphosphate, its main characteristics include a very low pH, around 2.0, as well as a very high chelation value for metal ions compared to SHMP as well as any other types of phosphates.

Is anyone familiar with this specification and are there similar metaphosphate products in the EU or US markets?

Thanks,

Ren

Hi polyphos:

It would be useful for you to get the CAS # from the SDS/label/CoA and use that to search for it.  When a salt is formed out of an acid, there are several ways to name it, but the CAS # never changes, as long as the material contains a single molecule.

I found on the VWR web site a compound that may be what you are looking for.  It is a mixture of sodium metaphosphate and phosphoric acid and they call it sodium acid metaphosphate.  Because it's a mixture, it does not have a CAS #.

This is ACS grade, not food grade, but you may be able to justify using it because of the high purity.  Or maybe that manufacturer sells it as food grade through another distributer.

Good luck.

Martha

Dear Polyphos,

I guess you are referring to this Japanese product  (Interesting Brand Name  ) –

It may be related to one of the class of compounds described in attachments below although many of these are customized items. [The percent P2O5 in (1) is higher than (3) while pH is lower]

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the responses as well as information!

To my knowledge, the CAS number for Sodium metaphosphate, 10124-56-8, mainly refers to SHMP, which has the chemical formula: (NaPO3)n, and a pH of about 6.8.

Now, this type of sodium acid metaphosphate I'm referring to has a very different formula: NaxHy(PO3)(x+y)(X,Y>=1), and the pH of this is about 2.0.

The product posted by Charles is actually a product of our company, ULTRAPOLYPHOS, interesting name, I know right? lol.

Here is the link to the product data sheet.

Do you guys think this product has applications in food processing in world markets?
