Compressed Air Industry Standards

Hi Everyone,

We recently ran some Standard plate count, yeast and mold tests and received the following results:

SPC 1 CFU/ 15 min

SPC 10 CFU/ 15 min

Yeast <1CFUs/ 15 min

Yeast <1 CFUs/ 15 min

Mold 3 CFUs/ 15 min

Mold 10 CFUs/ 15 min

The compressed air has a 0.1 micron filter on it, and we will be changing it every 3 months.

The compressed air is used for food contact during the process.

Im having a hard time finding the industry standards for this.

Once i get a a few months of data and all the results are within the acceptable limits, i would like to reduce the frequency of testing. After i do this is it really necessary to run all 3 tests? or is SPC or APC acceptable?

Thanks!

I'd be happy with those plate counts to be honest. Our HACCP on compressed air focuses more on the risk of chemical contamination from the oil used in the compressor, and the intrinsic risk of water vapour in the lines (messes up our compressed air run printers), but that's just based on our risk assessment. Our plant is not in an agricultural area, so the risk of air-bourne bacteria from, for example, slurry spreading is decreased. Saying that, we manufacture a low risk product. Let us know some more details - the world of compressed air is a bit of deep pool of pain. Also, are you carrying out this testing for due dilligence purposes or has it been requested?

Dear Weebus,

Should be easier to comment with some more context, eg units, (sampling/micro)procedure, product, process

Maybe try the link in this current thread -
