9.9.1.4 - Rule for covering trash?
So, In SQF 7.2 it says:
9.9.1.4 "Waste disposal equipment, collection bins, and storage areas shall be maintained in a serviceable condition and cleaned and sanitized regularly so as not to attract pests and other vermin"
So the non-conformance in my audit is that outside trash containers were not covered. I have large dumpsters that are covered, but we also use labeled barrels outside in certain areas then move these to the dumpsters. Do these need to be covered? Does the code mandate this? The auditor insisted that ALL trash containers should be covered.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
All of our outside trash receptacles have the dome type covers with a spring/hinge door to push trash thru. The spring/hinge offers just enough resistance to prevent pests and small rodents getting inside.
As I recall our auditor was fine with that.

Hi Brian,
I anticipate the global answer to yr OP will be YES for the exact reasons given in yr SQF quotation.
IMEX, it's a favorite beeline for auditors. Often followed by elevated water tanks.
cGMPs require covered trash containers also.
So, does this apply to indoor trash containers as well, or just outdoor?
Indoor & outdoor.
OK, based upon what standard? When I read the SQF code, it only mentioned outdoor specifically needed to be covered....?
Actually, I read it more closely...it doesn't mention lids/covers at all, except for liquid waste. However, the Module 11 Guidance document mentions that "Waste handling, storage and disposal procedures include how waste is contained in appropriate, covered and labeled containers" - so, how does the Guidance document come up with something that the Code itself doesn't specify?
None of my indoor dry waste containers for the processing plant have covers, but my liquid barrels (broken shell eggs) have covers. the liquid barrels all get moved into refrigeration every night and when they are full, stay in refrigeration till picked up. I have been through 8 SQF audits (all level 3) and have never had an auditor question this. My outdoor dumpsters all have covers and I make sure that if one gets damaged we have the company replace the dumpster. I would be concerned about rodents getting into dumpsters, but this is not an issue indoors. All trash is removed every day at end of day sanitation shift and if needed during the day.
