Regulation for Disposal of Dietary Supplement

Hi all,

What is the regulation regarding disposal of dietary supplements (large quantities). We have more than 1000Lbs that they do not meet the specification of the labels (and can not be re-worked), we want to dispose of them. The pH is 3.5, is it possible to adjust the pH to 7, and just flush them in the sink using small amount each day?

Thank you

It will depend on what is present in the supplements. I know that if they contain certain amounts of specific nutrients (ex Chromium) they reach a different classification and must be disposed in a more formal manner. If they have live cultures (probiotics) they also require specialized disposal.

Thank you so much Plastic Ducky for replying to my question. Where can I find if the information to look up if any of the specific nutrients are present in DS.

Hello chakib,

if your dietary supplements ingredients are of food grade quality ,edible quality you can use it in animal feed as supplements or  give it to animals as supplements along with their food.

Chakib,

RCRA hazardous waste: includes any waste that falls under the federal RCRA Characteristics of Ignitability, Corrosivity, Reactivity or Toxicity. They most common concern is the concentration of RCRA toxicity characteristic metals.

These metals include: Arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, and silver.

Nutritional supplements containing items qualifying as RCRA hazardous waste must be destroyed via incineration.
