What allergen test kits are out there?

I am looking for a quantitative allergen test that can be completed in house and provide good information regarding control of allergens.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which test kits to use. The should be accurate, cover the following allergens (Crustacean, fish, gliadin, gluten, mustard, soy, milk/casein/beta lactoglobulin and of course sulphites).

I will be testing environmental cleanliness for absence of allergens mostly but would also like to do analysis of finished products as well.

I m producing seasoning blends, batters, marinades etc.

Thanks...

Hi DRL,

Neogen supply a range:

'Neogen offers screening and quantitative food allergen test kits to detect almond, β-Lactoglobulin (BLG), casein, cashew, crustacea, egg, gliadin/gluten, hazelnut, lupine, mustard, peanut, pecan, pistachio, sesame, soy, total milk, and walnut residues. Neogen’s food allergen tests can detect the target allergen in ingredients, liquids, clean-in-place rinses, finished foods, and on environmental surfaces.'

Dear DRL

I agree with Tony-C...Neogen has one of the better catalog of allergen testing kits. I do have a question for the environmental swabs: are you going to swab standardized surface areas in order to be able to define an allergen amount per surface unit? If not, you might save some money and testing time by using presence/absence kits for enviro samples and then use quantitative testing for product.

Hi KTD,

presence/absence kits for enviro samples

I'll bite.

What does that test for ?

presence or absence of the particular allergen I would have thought....

We use Neogen for most of the equipment allergen test, but for Gluten free products, we use ROMER test, They are very easy to read.

I have looked at the Neogen kits and they seem to be the best. Thanks Tony C I think I will do quantitative for finished product and presence/absence for environmental. Thanks KTD.

I am having a dilemma though. The Neogen kits have a limitation and wonder if all kits would have the same limitation. The kits say that there is a problem with detecting allergen in highly processed products. Like Hydrolysed Plant Protein or Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein. Example Soy protein that has been turned into HPP may not be detected. I am thinking that if you have any of the proteins present it will provide for a positive.

Will the proteins that do not get detected due to their change in structure still cause an allergic reaction in people with an allergy or intolerance to Soy protein?

Thoughts?

No mentioned was made of a kit to test for sulphites (sulphur dioxide). Has anyone got an idea of such a kit and has been approved for sulphite testing?

Very much interested.

Hi,

I would like to re-fresh the topic.

I am looking for potential 3 companies, who offer the gluten testing in house. i would like to use the kits, which provide the readings in ppm (so no strips).

Could you, please recommend the companies, who provide such a kit?

I have done my studies on Neogen, and it looks fabulous, but to convince my boss, i need to show there are other options.

Also for detection of peanuts, are there any options?

Help would be much appreciated.
