Becoming an auditor in a Trading company

Hi there,

I work in a trading company, we import and distribute full containers or pallets of dried fruits, nuts and seeds in UK. We are now trying to get BRC certification for Agents and brokers. One of the points in the standards is about Auditing our suppliers. My boss is thinking to send me to an auditor course (I have a MSc in Food science, Safety and Health) so we don't have to hire external auditor. I wonder if you can advise which course would be suitable. I believe I have to take a Lead auditor course? I have search online but many of them are related to ISO22000, or the ones for FSSC 22000 have more requirements...

I hope you can advice

Many thanks,

Marcela

Hi Marcela,

If you want BRC related training then have a look at the BRC Academy website.

I see they do provide a Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 7 - Third Party Auditor - 5 days which should be quite comprehensive.

Tony

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the link but I don't think it is what I'm looking for. I need to learn audit techniques to audit FSMS and not only BRC, as I will be auditing our suppliers that may hold ISO, GFSI or any other accreditation.

Do you know any in who can provide this in UK?

Many thanks,

Dear Marcela,

I have done the BRC 3rd Party auditor training and although is BRC orientated you do learn audit techniques and BRC requirements cover a lot of the requirements that other GFSI standards also do.

I really feel that this could be a good starting point.

Hi Marcela

There is the Level 3 Award in Effective Auditing and Inspection Skills.

This is a one day course and aimed at general auditing in a food business.

Depending on where you are in the UK you may be able to participate in a course being run for another company.

If you want to email me xxxxxxxxxxxx I can give you more details

Hi Marcela,

I understand your reaction, but you are looking for BRC certification. The best alternative IMO, an ISO Lead Auditor course will not teach you BRC requirements.

If you dont have self analytical skills then a 100 days course also cannot help.

Hi Marcela

ISO Lead Auditor training will show you the methodology that any auditor would find valuable and I'm sure they would satisfy the requirements of training, but don't expect the trainer to be remotely versed in food safety.  Many of the lessons that you'll learn are universal, however, such as time management, agenda setting, and how to handle one's self during the audit.

Best of Luck
