Arsenic in Food Regulations
Hi All,
I am hoping that someone can advise or at least point me in the right direction. I am trying to confirm what the limit is for Arsenic in fish. My current source of information is the Arsenic in Food Regulations 1959 (S.I.[1959] No. 831), as amended. Has this been superseded and is limit still 1mg/kg?
I have done an extensive trawl (pun intended) of the EU regulations and am struggling to find a definite answer.
Many thanks.
Hi scullerdude,
Well, in 2005, it was apparently unregulated.

I'm sure the Fish Population share yr concern also.
There's this as well, but not especially helpful. http://www.efsa.euro...ournal/pub/1351
Is there no industry body to set standards? I work in the juice industry and we have the AIJN to specify heavy metal limits.

According to above report which is listed in COMMISSION REGULATION (EC) No 1881/2006 ‘…For arsenic no ML is yet established….’.

According to above summary – still under discussion after recent limits imposed on rice/ rice products.

Hi Scullerdude,
According to this rather amazing website, yr understanding may still be valid in Scotland unless "fish" have been defined somewhere within as an exception

(see Aresenic.....)
The reference from abcfoodsafety may not up to date - I believe the Scottish regulation has been revoked under the
The Food (Miscellaneous Amendment and Revocation) (Scotland) Regulations 2013.

Although I wouldn't put it past my Scottish brethren to still enforce the old Reg.!
Hi Scotty,
I defer to yr Scottish awareness.
Fascinating to see that there exists a "Queen’s Printer for Scotland".
Not for much longer maybe.
