Clean room standard or ratings

Hello,

As I have posted previously we are a small family owned business that make plastic bags in Australia.  We are striving to achieve HACCP and have been asking advice on clean room construction and items on here, and it has been great to get the help and feedback on these items.

I spoke to a contractor today and they wanted to know what standard or grade of clean room we want to achieve.  As I mentioned to him we do not have anything to do with food at our site, but we are wanting to supply bags into the food sector and they will have direct contact in some cases.   Can anyone help guide me as to what the standard or rating clean room would be required for our circumstances.

Thanking you,

Wendy.

Hi Wendy,

You might want to look at the BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials Issue 5 High Hygiene section (available for free from BRC) which should give you an idea of the typical requirements for food contact packaging.

Kind regards,

Tony

You may want to check out Wikipedia page on clean rooms, it explains the different classifications, which is based on particles per volume of air.

In my experience you shouldn't need a clean room such as this for producing food contact packaging.  Yes your production facility should be clean and hygienic, but not sterile, you are not producing pharmaceuticals or medical devices.  Who said you need a clean room?

Regards,

Simon

For Food grade FIBC Bags, most of them claim to have ISO Class 8 but whether it is certified or declared is the question.
