Hazard Analysis on sand filter
Hi, we had an auditing recently, an auditor commented that we should have hazard analysis on sand filter contents such as anthracite, sand .etc as its part of our raw material. I was wondering if anyone has similar raw material like me, what are the potential hazard u r look into it when conducting hazard analysis? Tks in advance .
Hi Carine,
I just had an SQF Gap Audit and the auditor commented on the same thing about the sand filter. We are fresh vegetable processor who uses a wash with sanitizer. Our process has a sand filter and very similar questions came up regarding it. I am following your post to see if there's more information. If I find anything I will for sure let you know our approach to this issue.
Thanks.

Hi carine,
Auditor maybe worrying about intrinsic chemical contaminants in filter being transferred to the water supply, or the filter enabling cross-contamination due storing / transferring contaminants from a variable water source.
How about yr results for testing for contaminants in the water input prior filter ?.
How often do you backflush ?
Hi, Charles,
water testing results prior to filtration is comply with standard.
Btw,what are the reason we should put in , so that chemical contaminants can be excluded as chemical hazard?

Hi carine,
You could use the first line of yr post above together with an equivalent (hopefully even better) data set for after the filters (I assume the "Standard" includes the items of interest to yr auditor),
I assume this Is water from a well ?
Basically what is required is for you to evaluate Sand as a processing aid hence how its made and its chemical residue possibly depending on how it is made so that there is no chance that sand as raw material can introduce hazards or ensure identified hazards are controlled (buying from approved suppliers or COA results for the sand to show that it does not pose any harm to food chain).
Hi carine,
Any further comments/replies ?
Dear Imugs,
Our existing supplier couldn't provide us any COA but only provide us chemical anyalysis report of solubility, Magnesia, Lime, Loss of Weight .. this is noting related to hazard analysis, i think.
I have attached a draft of hazard analysis for sand filter media, appreciate if you could input your valuable comments on it.
this is the attachment.
The hazards associated with sand are physical and chemical contaminants, so you can work out your control measures if you identify your hazards. HACCP is a scientific discipline , If there are none hazards supported by scientific evidence then you are good to go as well.

Hi carine,
Thks for above.
First time i have seen the word "perceived" in a risk assessment. Sort of invites a request for validation.
