FSSC 22000 scope
Hello everybody and Congratulations for the wonderful work that you ve done with this site.
I recently finished my master studies in Food Quality Management in Wageningen university in the Netherlands and I am currently working as a volunteer in a start up company in quality department. The director is asking for the FSSC 22000 certification and my task is to design it and implement it. A few words about the company: It develops, produces and sells quinoa ingredients. However, all of the pre-mentioned activities are not implemented by our company but from external companies/organizations. For example the production and cultivation of the quinoah is carried out by the company A. An other logistic company B is responsible for the logistical part (transfer/storage). The processing part is implemented by a company C that has the suitable equipment and finally the orders are going to the customers through the logistic company B.
Therefore the activities that are carried out by our company are the followings:
· The small scale in-house storage, repacking and handling of organic and conventional packed quinoa ingredients for sampling purposes;
· The sales of both organic and conventional quinoa ingredients under our brand.
So my first question would be if our company is in FSSC 22000 scope?
Moreover, I have too many questions regarding the FSSC but lets take one by one the steps. :spoton: . Thnx for your time.

It's a very auspicious body of learning. :thumbup:
Must admit i had never heard of quinoa.
Yr Company sounds like having a complicated business model.
Not myself a user of fssc22000 but in theory yr query should be answerable somewhere, eg Qu.4, on this fssc FAQ -

Unfortunately fssc have a somewhat octopus-like scope so the above document is IMEX not trivial to navigate although usually quite comprehensive.
Hopefully some other fssc user here may identify with yr situation and respond.
Personally I have previously tossed such queries of my own to a recognized auditing Company for the Standard involved with the promise of subsequent business. IMEX auditors are only too willing to advise for free.
From memory, typical fssc certificates designate the specific manufacturing unit which is audited.

i) Processing of animal products, plant products, combination of plant and animal products
ii) Processing of ambient stable products
iii) Production of pet food for dogs and cats
iv) Production of bio(chemicals)
v) Production of food packaging and packaging material
vi) Production of animal feed
vii) Production of pet food for other pet than dogs and cats
viii) Farming of animals for meat/milk/egg/honey
ix) Farming of fish and seafood
If the company is not doing itself one of the following activities but it is outsourcing them, then it cannot be included within the scope of FSSC. That is my conclusion so far. Let me know if you think i am right. So, my next question would be: which of the GFSI approved standards could be a good fit for my company?

It appears that yr company may be acting as a broker ? If so BRC have an agents/brokers standard.
Here is the scope of iso22000 -
Organizations within the food chain range from feed producers and primary producers through food manufacturers, transport and storage operators and subcontractors to retail and food service outlets (together with inter-related organizations such as producers of equipment, packaging material, cleaning agents, additives and ingredients). Service providers are also included.
All requirements of this International Standard are generic and are intended to be applicable to all organizations in the food chain regardless of size and complexity. This includes organizations directly or indirectly involved in one or more steps of the food chain. Organizations that are directly involved include, but are not limited to, feed producers, harvesters, farmers, producers of ingredients, food manufacturers, retailers, food services, catering services, organizations providing cleaning and sanitation services, transportation, storage and distribution services. Other organizations that are indirectly involved include, but are not limited to, suppliers of equipment, cleaning and sanitizing agents, packaging material, and other food contact materials.

Because we do not just provide the same product that we receive by the producer to the customer. Our R&D developed the product by creating some recipes under our brand. So even if we do not process the product in our facilities, the specific products are only sold under our brand.

Hi Pad,
Ok ,it sounds like you have an Integrated Co-Packer set-up.
Presumably the various segments you mention could be individually certified to fssc 22000.
BRC Food has this -
3.5.4 MANAGEMENT OF OUTSOURCED PROCESSING AND PACKING
Where any process step in the manufacture or packing of a product which is included within the scope of certification is
subcontracted to a third party or undertaken at another site, this shall be managed to ensure it does not compromise the
safety, legality, quality or authenticity of the product
3.5.4.1 The company shall be able to demonstrate that where part of the production process or final packing is
outsourced and undertaken off-site this has been declared to the brand owner and, where required,
approval granted.
But this may not cover an ("external") operation as wide as you refer ?? :uhm:
