Supplier approval of food additive suppliers
Has anyone got experience assessing food additive suppliers. Currently underaking supplier approval ahead of our BRC audit.
One of the suppliers supply us processing aids. What sort of documents would be required to approve this type of supplier?
Hello Felipe,
If you product are from a distributor/trader, you must secure/provide certification that the product can be traced to the last manufacturer.
"the site must know the identity of the last manufacturer"

Hi Felicia,
My approach is to consider them all as raw materials suppliers. It's worked so far as we were audited last month with 4 minors. You should know as much about your processing aids manufacturers/suppliers as you do about your raw materials suppliers/manufacturers.
Dear Felicia,
In addition to the previous comments, I like to add a few topics, that can be requested to the additive supplier. The decision for not going to audit can only be made by a Risk Assessment:
- The quality certificates (for example ISO 22000, BRC or IFS, the ones you require in your purchasing procedure).
- Your Food Safety questionnaire, to be filled out by the supplier.
- Product specification including: Allergen data, nutritional data, packaging details, type of additve (name, formula and E-numbers), composition.
- SDS sheet (not for Food Safety, but for human safety).
- Purity data. A risk assessment on Food fraud.
I wish you good luck with the supplier approval procedure and with the BRC audit!
Kind regards,
Gerard Heerkens
Hi Gerard
Could you more detail about purity data or Authenticity of raw material ? Is it the same with CoA?
if not mind, could you share as example an Authenticity document?

Feri
Hello,
I guess what Gerard means is the RA of RM against fraudulent activity. VACCP (BRC) and TACCP for USFDA/FSMA.
