Employee Training
We have always had planned meetings and quizzes they fill out for the specific training that was provided. Now, our SQF consultant has set it up as the training meetings and sign off that they were trained, but verbal quizzes instead of paper ones. "Add roster of trainees to back of training quiz in binder"
I have our first policy training scheduled tomorrow morning and am planning on having them fill out the quizzes, but going over them verbally as a group. Similar to our Chemical company trainings we do.
What are the thoughts about this?
Hi Lisa,
Our company has been SQF certified for a few years, and here's how our training goes:
- Employees being trained sign off on a Training Sign-Off Sheet that lists the type of training, trainer name, training date, employee name and signature, whether the training is new or refresher, and who has verified the training
- Training is given via Video, Powerpoint Presentation, or Discussion
- Each employee is given a short paper quiz on the training material
- Tests are collected and then the answers are reviewed as a group
- SQF Practitioner or Training Leader score and verify tests
- Tests (if new training) and sign-in sheets (for everyone, regardless of the training being new or refresher) are copied and stored in the employee's files. the originals, including the scored tests for everyone, are stored with the year's training files held by Document Control (after 12 months they are sent to storage)
We've never had a problem with an auditor before on this. In fact, our 2015 auditor requested to see evidence of an employee's GMP training after he was seen wearing a necklace. So I'm all for having multiple ways of confirming training for someone. And tests are a good way to measure employee competence in an area and prove that the training was effective.
That is basically what we do:
(1) Present the training.
(2) Attendees answer the questions during the presentation.
(3) Presenter reviews the questions and answers at the end.
This saves time by not having to go back to each individual who had an incorrect answer.
The presenter reviews all the quizzes before they are sent to H&R for documentation of type of training, name of trainer, and who attended. This recorded info then becomes our training log. We can see who received the training and when.
Yup...this is what we do as well. It works great because people answer as a group and if someone answers wrong the other persons tend to explain why it wasn't the right answer. It is true teamwork.
I will say our SOP training is different as it is visual and hands-on. We are a dairy so we have a lot of sanitation SOP's with various hook-ups. For us, visual is really one of the only ways to go. Many of our SOP's are just pictures with some wording. The verification is asking the trainees to complete the necessary hook-up steps in the procedure.
