Dear Bros

 

Hello everybody, I'm Tom from Vietnam. Currently, I'm a Management Trainee of the QAQC Department of a Global Dairy Company. I have to say in the first place that I don't really have much real experience about the job. So I'd like to take this chance to ask for advice from those seasoned bros who are already very professional auditors.

 

Briefly about my management trainee program (in case you dont know). The whole program is to facilitate and challenge me to acquire a managerial position in 2 years.

 

First I got rotated to number of relevant departments for about 3 months then I would be back to my QAQC department to actually involve into the job. Then they would throw me some projects or I would have to find them myself to prove my capability, Periodically, top management will assess and decide whether I'm qualified to move on with the program.

 

At the moment, I've just finished my rotation period to other departments including: R&D, Production, Planning... and I will be back to QAQC department very soon. My problem here now is that the HR department is now overwhelmed due to shortage in manpower. They now have higher priorities than my career development plan. My local company is on transition state, which mean they're refreshing the whole system and make a lot of savings from both manpower and materials. 

 

I don't think HR would deliver me the plan until the next month so I decide to make a move first, that is to make my own development plan and propose to HR and my boss before hand.  I'm very interested in becoming management system auditors in the future as a long term career goal, but also in managing limited resources as a manager in quality assurance. 

Since all I got now is just knowledge from schools (I'm quite a fresh graduate), so please give me advice on how many areas relevant to my purpose above should I focus to develop to achieve them, it is to about the professional subjects (not to mention about the soft skills which I'm so interested). IF YOU HAVE ANY MODEL OR REAL PLAN ON DEVELOPING ONE (QUALITY ASSURANCE MANAGER OR AUDITOR) IN REAL LIFE, PLEASE GIVE ME TOO, I WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED! Thank you in advance!

i deduce that the Company wish you to ultimately take on (take-over ?) the function of QA Mngr.

 

i also deduce you have a limited technical background prior to joining this facility ?

 

The first necessity IMO would be to acquire such knowledge via some formal training schemes. IMO an on-the-job approach to learning QA such as you seem to be describing will not be adequate. In fact I'm rather surprised that Top Management appear to think that it will.

Is this a family-run business ?

Are formal QA courses available in Vietnam ?

Thank you sir for answering my question. What you deduced were all true. The program intends to train me to become a QA manager within 2 years.
As I said this is not a family run business but a quite big Dairy Manufacturing corporate which has many opcos across the world. Where I work is   one opco of the big corporate located in VN.

 

As I explained, the company is refreshing its system so the HR department is very overwhelmed with other projects so my program is just to be delayed until next month cause there's no plan for my next activities at the moment.  I know that on the job training would not be sufficient to be fully take such role, so that's why first I need to know what kind of subjects, expertise, skills (in reality) do I need in order to make a career plan for me, then I would propose this to my boss and align with him and push other relevent departments. (it's an act of proactiveness). So if you have such kind of a plan (model or real are both interested) or any sources (training videos/ websites) that can provide me those infomation pls give me one. Thank you very much!

QA is a generic title. Food QA is something else.

 

I "converted" from a Chemist to Food QA and found the QC/QA portion to be slowly acquirable in the background via textbooks/seminars etc but I am continuously aware of still possessing only a fraction of the food knowledge acquired by someone who has studied something like Food Science.

 

This was the reason for my last query which would be my first choice if it exists/you have sponsored access to it. Possibly via part-time study.

 

If there is nothing, it's going IMO to be a long haul. Any Plan will inevitably involve The so-called Natural Sciences as oriented to Food (possibly Dairy).

 

Or are you anticipating relying primarily on the internet ?.

My background is also Chemist
 

For Dairy Techonology, I'm using the Dairy Handbook of Tetrapak to acquire the theory about Dairy Product and Processing Knowlege. .  I certainly have to learn about them through practical rotation (on the job training) to the production & QC dept as well.

And Yes, in Vietnam there are lots of agencies training formal courses about management systems. But as I said, I need to know what curriculum is essential to be a professional QA  so that I can propose to my boss and HR those courses. The structure of our QA deparment is devided in 3: source,make and deliver. So I would expect to acquire one manager position in 1 of these. Especially, a QA manager could be an Internal Auditor at the same time and I'd like to be one also. What is IMO by the way? Thank you!

I have to say that I am more involved with Technical QA than the Management function so I am not a good source of course advice for the latter although many other people here will be.

 

The Tetrapak book  is (obviously) specialised although, from memory, the theory is carefully developed/expanded from basic concepts.

 

I daresay your primary QA "Food" interest is currently limited to Dairy which you can maybe acquire by OJT ?  If so, I guess that leaves courses on Management Techniques assuming these not so readily available within the Company.? Although HACCP maybe will need external assistance.

 

i think you will find most offered Management courses have a similar basic structure/curriculum so the only difference is maybe whether some hv more emphasis on aspects related to yr own work/interest. Personally i have extensively used Juran's QC handbook for self-instruction but this is probably antique by current standards. 

 

 I assume all the fundamental Food QA texts are available in Vietnam. Maybe you should initially obtain some external course curricula for comparison. Possibly post on here for comments..
