What are the best methods to have secure Employee Identification?
Hi All
We are a small (17 production employees (8-9 employees per shift)) snack food company that is trying to determine what level of employee identification we need.
What is the best way to have secure employee identification? Clips are hard because people forget and have them laundered. Lanyards provide issues around machinery. Anywhere above waist level becomes a foreign object waiting to happen. Do they even need to have them on the production floor if supervisors know each individual? Is photo identification required? We have FOB access into the lunch room which leads into the production floor which provides an electronic record of who came in when.
Basic GMP HACCP Certification.
MANY THANKS :)
This one can be tough to determine, but I would assess your risk in terms of food defense and security. A great tool for this is the FDA Food Defense Plan Builder. It is a free software tool that assesses your risks and scores the vulnerability where further action is needed.

In terms of specific employee identification, a facility that small would simply have facial recognition and uniforms. That would be the easiest to apply and enforce. However, you also need to look at the facility security because that plays a role in how you would establish employee recognition. For example, is the facility gated with limited access? Are the exterior doors locked down at all times?
I believe with the employee strength that you have , facial recognition and a robust attendance & monitoring system should suffice .
You can look at printing their name on the protective clothing though I think that shouldn't be required.
Yes...names on uniforms would be part of the program as well. I always forget this little detail, but it does have significance.
We are a small facility with few employees as well. Contractors and visitors wear an orange hair net, while employees wear white hair nets. (No cost difference where we buy them). There is a sign in sheet used for contractors and visitors. Training includes "notify your supervisor of strangers" language.
