Glass Breakage - how far to clear the line?

I was wondering if anyone had any information on glass breakage? We run glass jars and when they break I was wondering if there is recommendation as to how far to clear the line? I had heard 10 feet in both directions but I dont know if that is correct? Is there any rule or is this provided by the company?

I have read thru the SOP's provided here but I was looking for a standard on how much line to clear off.

Thanks in advance

Hi jfox,

It all depends on how far the glass will spread on the floor. A good rule of thumb is 3 times the height from which it falls, so a waist high line (1m) would need to be cleared 3m (10ft) each direction. Of course if the line is low, the glass probably won't break and if it is high up it will spread further.

Hi, jfox;

This hazard would most certainly be risk assessed on your specific manufacturing practices...

  • Line covers
  • Catch pans
  • Line speed
  • Line conveyor paddles
  • Product (temperature, viscosity, density, etc.)
  • Bottling properties
  • Compressed air/running evap units

Too many variables
