Water filtration 100 microns?

Hi all,

We have a specific retailer requirement which says " All water used on site within process areas (cleaning etc) should be filtered to a minimum of 100 micron". All water used in our plant comes from municipal water and it is potable. We have an osmosis plant for water used as ingredient but not all water used in process areas is filtered. Can anyone help me with it?

IMEX (not in Spain) the typical regulatory requirement is that process water must comply with local regulations. This usually means comply to a local drinking water standard. Hopefully the local water complies with such standard.

For export to EC, the water is required to comply with EC regulations which are available on IT.

i don't recall any generic reference to specific filter requirements for process water but (a) there may be a specific local requirement, (b) it may depend on what you are using the water for ?.

100 microns is meaningless from a water safety perspective...that's not even small enough to sort out large protozoans. It would only help with water clarity, so maybe they've had problems with rust/particulates in products in the past?

This requirement makes no sense to me.

I agree with F³. This is a ridiculous requirement, and has nothing to do with food safety. Could you perhaps collect some information on your water quality (micros etc.) and present it to the customer in the hope that you can be exempt from the requirement? If not, price out the cost of adding the water filters and add that cost to the product that you sell to them.

Question the supplier on their reasoning for this.  If you can flesh that out and do a risk assessment they may be fine with it.  Water may play a critical role in their product which may be why they want to have that in place.

If they are being hard lined about the requirement see if it makes more sense to install the filter or use your RO water for their products.

This requirement is useless. I think that it just fills the price of the product due to the cost of filters
