Labeling of Spice Blends

Hi, in https://www.fda.gov/...n/ucm265446.pdf it says
"However, products that are spices or spice blends, flavors or colors must list each ingredient by name. FD&C Act 403(i)(2) and 21 CFR 101.22(h)(1) "

I have been trying to call the FDA and get clarification, but no one ever calls me back.

If 2 or 3 different types of the same spice are used, ex. paprika, does each different cultivation have to be listed? ex. Hungarian paprika, Spanish paprika, etc.? or just "paprika?

Can someone please advise?
Thanks Gloria

You shouldn't have to list specific species unless one of them is considered a dietary hazard.  So, using "Paprika" should be fine.

Flavors and color additives are specifically unique, so you can't say "yellow color" for "Yellow 1 and Yellow 2".

The goal is to make consumers aware of any ingredient that may be a dietary concern.  So crowding up the label with extensive lists of species of GRAS ingredients such as paprika, may be confusing.

If anything, look at similar consumer products, and use that as a guide.

Hope that helps.

Gloria Hi,

Are they the same specification and just from different suppliers or are they commonly known by their different names?

Cheers

DW

Hi, thanks for the reply,

Yes, they are from different suppliers

They are types like, Hungarian hot, Hungarian sweet,  Spanish smoked sweet, and a few more.

How would these be listed on the bottle?

Can I just list as "paprika"? or do they all need to be described?

Like I said... too, no one at the FDA calls me back, no matter how many messages I have left.
I would really like clarification.. thanks :-D

:shades:

Sorry, so do you blend spices and sell spices i.e you said 'Hungarian sweet' so you blend them and sell them on or do you manufacture say a ready meal and they are contained within?

Sorry, yes to clarify, it is a blend of spices for sale. Thanks

And these are not mine, I'm asking for a friend

Hi, going by the fda then it states you must name the ingredients within the blend not just for example, Paprika contains: Hungarian paprika and Spanish paprika blend.

But that is my question, it just says "ingredients" and Paprika is an ingredient.
" must list each ingredient by name".. it's all Paprika

How specific do I need to be.
If I'm listing others, then it's (for example) Oregano, Salt, Pepper, Paprika, Tarragon... none of the others specify the "type" of Oregano or the "type" of Tarragon, so why would I need to list the types of Paprika.
this is what I need clarification on

I hope you understand my dilemma ..

Thanks Gloria

What do you mean by 'If im listing others'?

Also are you blending say 2 different types of paprika to make your own blwnd of paprika?

Just put 'Paprika' looking at it

If its organic:- Ingredients: Organic Paprika for example

If you write a spec then on that you would stipulate coutrys of origin / types

What do you mean by 'If im listing others'?

Yes, exactly, it's a Paprika blend.
