Electricity or power cut contingency plan

Dear All,

 

would like to seek advice for develop  contingency/emergency respond plan during the electricity breakdown or power cut. We already have the procedure for fire and chemical spillage. I just wanna include the power break down contingency plan and what the production worker or staff should do whenever the power supply failed. How to escape from darkness etc... anyone for samples or suggestion please assist accordingly

You should have the evacuation information in your H&S system. Much of it will be specified by the local authorities under their H&S legislation. You will have emergency lighting so your workers aren't in complete darkness won't you?

 

It's the recovery that will be a challenge. You'll need to complete all your start up procedures before re-starting, including calibrations and labels. Check all temperatures as your chillers/aircon etc will have been out of action. Clear the lines of product as you cannot guarantee it. Ensure that the correct recipes are loaded into the machines, that your date coders have restarted correctly and have been reset. There's probably more that others can add for you.

 

I've experienced a few of these and they're no fun. You know you've lost production and time, but you should never hurry the restart even though the production dept would like to.

Well noted on your explanation, For the info during my recent audit prior the auditor enter to processing area the electricity was breakdown. She found that in the minimum lighting darkness (emergency lighting) the production staff did not react or evacuation the cold room since there is no any contingency plan for the electricity breakdown. The really don't know what they should do if there is electricity breakdown and they worried because the auditor in front the processing entrance. 

 

 The auditor issued the non conformity for above issue as an corrective action i would like come out with contingency plan. I believed you understood my situation

You should conduct mock Drill in you plant at frequency interval of time. Provide radium taping path, also evacuation plan should be displayed at prominent location with lighting. You can use emergency light operated through battery. The best way is,  to trained the worker on evacuation plan and frequent mock drills.

Who already tried to install solar pannels?

Also in SEA, I know your pain. Some machines in my company have UPS to overcome instant power shortage. However if the power cut is long and the machines completely stop, we have to quarantine and sort defective products caused by the incident. QC also does some extra tests on products at restart.

Hi Bailey! Are there any systems can handle industrial wattage at 380V? All advertisements I've got only propose selling to the grid system, and this violates our business licence.

We lost power last year on several occasions due to some extremely hot weather - the power source (or whatever it is) is stored in a brick shed with a corrugated metal roof, causing the system to literally melt. We have back up generator and this failed on all occasions. Our machines run for about 30 mins afterwards before loosing power. Our staff simply carried on working in the pitch black. We have several 'fast doors' that are run on power obviously, and people got caught in a storage area that has no other means of exit other than through fast doors. (easy to get out, just a few people to lift the bottom of the door - however definitely consider these things when creating plans)
