3.5.3 Supplier Approval of Waste Management Company
We are going for BRC certification in January, and I'm currently reviewing 3.5.3. We have supplier approval processes in place for everything except Waste Management. I'm having a hard time thinking of a requirements for our Waste Management Company. They are the only disposal company that services this area. I was thinking that the approved company must provide containers that close, pick up at an frequency which controls the amount of waste build up.. and I can't really think of anything else to add here. Can anyone suggest any other items or have any idea of what BRC is looking for?
Thank you
Hello
The waste collection service should be able to provide you with a contract or a service agreement that outlines the frequency of their service, the type of service, what kind of container they will supply, if they will clean the container between pick ups, what to do if you need extra pick ups or the container is damaged, and security services for their equipment. There should be something stated either in your internal program or their agreement that this will be reviewed if there is an increase in volume or shifts. A risk assessment addressing any food safety risk (i.e. frequency of pick ups) will also support your program.
Hi QAJess1
You'll also want to be assured that the WM company has the appropriate licences from the relevant regulatory bodies to operate. In the UK, the local authority and the Environment Agency issue these. It confirms that the waste will be suitably disposed.
