Has anyone performed a risk assessment for carrier drivers having access to the shipping area to pick up their freight?

Dear Djammur,

Not knowing the context, I think it's valuable to consider wether the carrier driver really needs acces to a such sensitive area of the company. Of course you may say to pick up their freight. But it can be a management decision to stop this practice.

Most Certification standards have a Food Defense paragraph, where you can find the necessary measures to manage the situation that you described, such as:

  • Defining the zones and its limits of where the truck driver may go;
  • Identification of the truck driver;
  • Accompaniment of the truck driver.

I hope that my answer provides you a good basis to continue to work on your quality system.

Kind regards,

Hi

For us, the truck drivers fall under the visitor policy and need to be escorted at all times.  We only allow them on the dock if there is a question or issue with the load. Otherwise they must stay in the designated area.

We did perform a risk assessment in the event that it is questioned during an audit. We listed out that drivers are escorted, they are required to sign in, the area is under camera surveillance, and the area is highly visible by the warehouse office.
