Depends on what your supplier approval procedure states. What makes them high risk? Be sure to differentiate between a high risk raw material and a high risk supplier.

Your standard may also help here.

Hi Thanhtien,

The standard is quite clear:

3.5.1.1

The company shall undertake a documented risk assessment of each raw material or group of raw materials including packaging

The risk assessment shall form the basis for the raw material acceptance and testing procedure and for the processes adopted for supplier approval and monitoring

3.5.1.2 The approval and monitoring procedure shall be based on risk and include one or a combination of:

• certification (e.g. to BRC Global Standards or other GFSI-recognised scheme)

• supplier audits, with a scope to include product safety, traceability, HACCP review and good manufacturing practices, undertaken by an experienced and demonstrably competent product safety auditor

or, for suppliers assessed as low risk only, supplier questionnaires.

So certification to BRC Global Standards or other GFSI-recognised scheme is an acceptable method of approving suppliers and an alternative to a supplier audit for high risk suppliers.

Kind regards,

Tony

Is it BRC ??

Dear Tanhtien,

As you can read in the above comments, there are situations where you can decide to rely on a GFSI certified system. In that case, it is very important, that you keep good records of the validity of the supplier certificate. Because, when the certificate is expired, you can't prove its food safety (= your food safety) anymore.

For high risk raw materials or strategic suppliers it's recommended to carry-out an audit, as they have an enormous influence on your company and processes.

Kind regards,

Gerard Heerkens
