Food Processing clothing

I work for a small facility that manufactures sauces and fudge, I am fairly new here but have been in the big industry for over 15 years. The employees currently wear cotton aprons, the keep the same one all day(another issue in itself) but then they are laundered at the facility with regular laundry soap. They are wanting to go through SQF, is there a REQUIREMENT regarding this? Previously, the manufactures I worked for used a service that decontaminated the clothing. I work at a small plant with only 15 employees so money is a huge factor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi staci,

This looks to be (about to be ?) relevant to the same SQF clause as referred in yr previous thread on hairnets, ie -

http://www.ifsqn.com...on/#entry117299

Whether similarly required in current SQF 7.2 Code (and thereby likely having Guidance material) i haven't checked. (For BRC the use of in-house laundering can be distinctly complicated and is frequently avoided).

Hi,

We have incompany laundry at one factory and we are BRC certified. We operate a low risk facility and a high risk facility in the same factory. The laundering of clothing we have adopted in our cleaning procedure.

The washing program is set at a temperature of 95 degrees Celsius and we have industrial washing machines using professional washing soap. We have adopted the sampling of clothes in our sample plan and sample on a specified frequency (TPC/entero/Listeria). We validate/calibrate the washing machines yearly by an external service provider and perform regular temperature checks during washing program with a calibrated reference thermometer to make sure the temperature is ok.

We separate the dirty work clothing from the different facilities in different bins (under gloves, boiler suits) and wash everything separated. Clothing for low risk facility is placed on racks after washing and clothing for high risk facility is placed in a closed cabinet to avoid contamination.

We have been BRC certified for some year now and the inlaundry washing was never an issue/led to NC's.

BRC is different from SQF but, I hope this might help you in some way.

I appreciate all the feedback! I see what I have been running into is that because I am from such larger manufacturing facilities such as Kraft, Con Agra, Dr. Pepper and Nestle is that I am not sure of the WHERE of some of the policies. I completely understand the need in my previous positions but I am being challenged on "if these items are a REQUIRED policy and if so, who?" I work for a small company where money is of the essence but they are trying to expand their market and most of the new customers are requiring SQF, thus all the questions.

Again, I greatly appreciate all your feedback and guidance.

Staci
