Are there any issues with self laundry of uniforms?

Hi all,

We are low risk ambient facility producer of snack foods (tortilla chips mainly). We are working to revamp our uniform policy under BRC due to the high cost of damaged uniforms. The issue we've had is our current service provider is unable to tie a damaged uniform to a name, so we are unable to charge careless employees for damage. 

We were thinking of allowing our packers (no risk for product contamination) to wear company provided, self-laundered t-shirts, while the rest of the production workers wear smocks as usual. 

I suppose this is a two-part question.

1) Do you see any issue with the t-shirts since this has been identified as a no-risk area?

2) Do you know of any companies that are able to tie a smock to a name so we can keep track of who is damaging the uniforms?

My company does self laundering of our PPEs and we are trying for BRC also. Our employees where t-shirts but it is covered by coats or aprons. The coats are colour coded by the department they work in. By colour coding by department this could narrow down with who destroy company provided uniforms.

We conduct a self laundry policy for workwear, again we are a very low risk - paper manufacturing, and are currently awaiting stage 1 ISO22000 audit

I suggest you study some of the previous related threads here.

I believe the majority opinion was to avoid self-laundering but context may relate of coiurse.

IIRC an important  aspect to resolve/satisfy is the FS expectation of validation of the laundering.

I had a uniform company that actually had the persons name on the smocks, if they were damaged because of carelessness the employee was spoken to the first few times if the behavior continued the employee was charged the cost of a new smock

Any company should be able to sew patches with names or embroider the names on the coats (or you can buy your own coats, have a seamstress do the sewing and just pay for laundering)

Coats are expensive, for sure. You could add a supervisor check instead........so every employee needs to have the coat checked as they are leaving the floor.

I don't like t shirts----people are NOT going to wash halfway up the upper arm (but should with a t shirt on)

Self-laundry of uniform post a risk of not having washed adequately and the detergent used is FDA approved.
