Labeling meat and poultry RTE product
Question for all you label junkies out there:
Is there a USDA regulation or guidance on labeling a meat an poultry item in order of predominance?
Example: A mixed meat product with a meat content that is 65% beef and 35% pork.
Should ingredient statement read Beef, pork, next predominant ingredient, and so on
Or should it read Beef and pork, next predominant ingredient, and so on
Or can it be listed both ways?
Yes, ingredients belong in order of predominance, though you might be able to squeak by with "beef and pork" provided your product includes more beef than pork. If you tried to switch the order LPDD would definitely see it as you trying to mislead a consumer.
