PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score)

Hi all,

I’m looking into USA regulations on label and hoping you can lend some help. This is regarding claiming high protein on the label. Our product need to have a protein content meeting 20% on PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score)  for a high protein claim. We don’t have this PDCAAS score, our external manufacturers have no experience calculating this/never done it before.

Is there any other method we can use to see if our product meet 20 % on PDCAAS? Does this test have to be done if we want to clam high protein on the label or is any other calculation we can apply to see if we meet this 20% requirement?

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Paula

To my knowledge, the PDCAAS is what FDA requires.  Unfortunately, I don't know how many labs are able to do this test.  Wikipedia does list the values for several common foods, so you may be able to use these values depending on your product formulation.  FDA does not require you to submit your data in advance, but you do have to be able to defend your claim if you are challenged.
