Introductions

Hey everyone, 

My name is Parker and I'm the Research and Development Specialist/Food Safety Manager at a produce company in Idaho. I've recently been given the responsibility of food safety manager at our Fresh Cut facility (I've assisted in the past with audits but never officially been the FS Manager) which is an SQF level 3 facility. We have a new operations manager who has no operations experience nor food safety experience so he's calling many of our standards and practices into question and I needed somewhere where I could validate our policies against new scrutiny.

Out of curiosity, do you know why they felt he was the right person for the job? Do you have any inkling to his mandate?

He is the salesperson responsible for our products in the company. We recently reorganized and the position of Operations Manager was created and senior management felt he was the best person internally for the job. I have the full support of our senior management as I've assisted/managed food safety for the past 4 years including passing 3 SQF Lvl 3 audits. As far as why he wants the policy to change, honestly he just doesn't want to dress down for quick trips to the production facility. He finds it a waste of time to spend 30-40 seconds putting on his smock and hairnet for a visit that takes less than 5 minutes.

Reading your topic, I think there is a lot of work to do in your company to improve the quality level and the awareness. Here are some thoughts:

• Leading by example. Your operations manager is undermining his own authority. I wish him good luck with convincing his employees to do the right things.
• Waste of time (30-40) seconds to put on his hairnet and smock: Is his time more valuable than the time of the company? Meaning if you have hair complaints or foreign bodies you will spend huge more time on resolving the complaint. Not speaking about the loss of consumers and customers.
