The difference between ingredient and raw material?
hello all, i would like to know from you what is the difference between ingredient and raw materiel according to the BRC , even though in BRC we talk about raw materiel and not about ingredient ,
They are one and the same
Whatever your "ingredients" are is also your "raw materials"
It's just another name meaning the same thing

Raw material - Any base material or semi-finished material used by the organisation for the manufacture of a product.
Raw material includes packaging material.
Unfortunately "base material" is undefined.
"Ingredient" is also undefined.
I speculate that the word "base" is intended to have this kind of (BRC) meaning -
Liquid egg, liquid
milk/drinks, cream,
liquid tea and coffee
creamers, yogurts,
fermented milk-based
products, fromage
frais/crème fraîche,
butter
So, for example, additives would presumably usually be "ingredients".

The terminology "food raw material" was introduced in BRC7 due the appearance of "Vulnerability Assessment (VA)" in Clause 5.7.2. where a Packaging Vulnerability Assessment was not required to be included.
The terminologies "raw materials" and "ingredients" appear to be used inconsistently within BRC7. For example Clauses 2.3.1, 2.14.1 imply that "raw materials" is (somehow) distinguished from (the undefined) "ingredients". However "raw materials" in clause 3.5.1.1 apparently includes both "ingredients" and "Packaging".

Raw material is any unprocessed or semi-processed material used during manufacturing which includes material, additives & processing aids. While additive is listed as an ingredient because it gets consumed as a part of food, but processing aid doesn't.

as long as there are both terms in the standard we can say that clause 3.5 in this case does not apply to ingredients, although the risk exists for raw materials and ingredients, I am really confused

As i read it, my link implied all the relevant inputs are to be risk assessed including packaging (analogous to the haccp plan).
