Sampling of 375g samples for salmonella testing
Hi,
Our normal sampling schedule consists the (for our product obligated) usual 5x 25g samples for salmonella testing. We now received a request from a client to have 375g samples tested for salmonella.
No I am a bit confused, should we just take a larger sample (5x 375g) or do we have to take more (15x25g) separate samples in order to be sure more spots in the batch are analysed? Or will 1 sample of 375g be sufficient since it is a larger sample?
I assumed the 375g analysis was based on having a larger amount of product from the same sample tested, but I am not sure about this. What is the exact background on the 25-125-375g etc. testing? Having larger samples to be analysed or more samples?
Thanks in advance!

if proceeding as per BAM, Yes

I anticipate yr client is following BAM.
Maybe see this parallel thread -
Thank you for your fast response.
We send the samples to an external laboratory, do they need to receive 15 separate samples or can we combine them ourselves? Now I have just sent a large sample, but I understand I have to take multiple samples from one batch and put them together right?
How are other QC departments doing this "in real life" :-)
As for the BAM, I took a quick look, but this seems more like a laboratory manual for performing analysis?

PatGear,
I would recommend to contact your external lab (assuming its an accredited lab) for sampling recommendation, as it can vary based on product type/s. I have found most of these labs very helpful to guide one in the right direction. We have been sending composite samples.
Chapter 5 (BAM) refers to the laboratory procedures, however, if you refer to chapter 1 (A) (1) Salmonella Species, it suggests about sampling plans.
Thank you for your fast response.

Hi PatGear,
You need to study the BAM chapter on sampling.
IMEX only labs which are following BAM sampling plans take such large samples. For comparison, the EC procedures for RTE foods use 5.
I anticipate that yr lab will only declare to have analysed 15 samples if such are received.
PS - sent before seeing post4
Ok thank you all, I will study the BAM first!
