So... has anyone passed an initial SQF Certification audit (level 2) with multi-ingredient items (salsas, dips, hummus) without the use of a metal detector on site?

Management Commitment

Yeah, no kidding.  Naturally, I am going to push the issue - hard.  But hey, it is only my second day with the new company  :shades:

I would argue that Risk Analysis should dictate whether or not their is a metal detector onsite

Best to purchase pre-Tariff ?

PS - Sorry Marshenko, very OT.

I hope someone answers yr query, does the product qualify as Low risk. sounds like RTE ?

Yes, but we had an X-Ray in it's place!

It is all RTE product, but I just had a meeting with the owner, and a metal detector will be acquired and in place when we move at the end of August.  Woot.

Hi Marshenko,

Good news.

If only one unit may need to study the practical disposition rather carefully so as to cover all  relevant products. If only one operational packing line not a problem of course.

1 Thank

Just the one line Charles.C.  We make a couple of different density items, but only one particular category of items is run at a particular time, nothing frozen, so setup of the line for product categories should be relatively easy.

Was definitely happy to get the "oh you'll have a metal detector shortly" response immediately after posing the question.

I just want to add that we do not have a metal detector onsite and also make a multi ingredient RTE product. The cutting unit (where an issue could arise) is inspected pre and post use for nicks/cracks/chips etc. We've been SQF certified for 4 years.

Update:  ain't got no metal detector, so I purchased a rare earth magnet to drop in Ye Olde Hopper as a substitute.  Management commitment indeed.

Hi Marshenko,

Is that cheaper or just more easily argued ? Or both ?.

I deduce you must have also (auditorially) adopted the Scampi (Post 10) method of physically logical observation + (the implicit)  politely forceful admonition.

Magnet was only $1000, it gets inspected after every run to check for fragments.  Equipment and hand tools are checked pre and post for any signs of breakage, and employees at the sealers are doing visual inspection of the product as best as possible.  It is the best I can do given the circumstances.

We may be adding more product types soon (sauces, dressings) and there will be a point where I will be insistent.
