Hi all
Just had BRC audit and received non-conformance for 'Annually metal detection calibration carried out with bigger metal pieces compare to operational critical limits'
MD calibration 2mm, 2mm, 3mm and operations 1,2mm, 1,5mm, 2.0mm, is this significant or are the calibration sizes not important as they are measuring something different.
Will contact calibration service but really wanted some insight before doing so

Your operating limits are below as compared to the calibration that you are performing under your Annual Metal Detection Program. Since your calibration was done at and >2mm, any detection <2mm (1.2mm, 1.5mm) creates a GAP and a conflict under your Calibration program.
Consult your Calibration service and Re-calibrate the detector as per your Operating limits.
The sizes AND types are of equal consideration. Both need to be properly calibrated yearly, or more depending on your machine.
Putting through larger/different types only proves that the machine recognizes those, not that is is properly registering the actual control bars you are using

The size of the specimen must be the size submitted for calibration. How can your MD detects smaller as your test piece, or metal inclusion in your product when you calibrated your MD to bigger size?
The uncertainty that your MD can capture target size and smaller is so high.

Normally, calibration shall be performed withranges that includes plant's operating range.
In the case of metal detector, a change of 0.1mm increment in contaminant size already impact significantly the signal received by the metal detector. If it is the opposite (the test piece you use for verifying your metal detector is lower), then not so much of a problem.
Btw, what do you "calibrate" for your metal detector?

It would appear yr auditor had definite limitations since BRC do not regard the the MD/operation you have described in OP as "Calibration".
