2.3.4 – How to verify Contract Manufacturers without auditing?

We are a low risk flexible packaging company implementing SQF HACCP Level (previously known as Level 2). We occasionally have contract manufacturers add zippers, slit, print, rework, or package our products. How do we verify that they are compliant with SQF without going in to their facility for an audit if they are not certified in a food safety system?

Tricky to do

But start with a quality evaluation of what you have.. The stuff they do for you.

Your SOP should include the creitia for what your exceptions are for the manufacturer. In the event there not SQF, your going to want to review there 3rd party audit reports too.

Honestly if it were me, I would consider to performing a 2nd party audit if your unsure of there food safety programs and it’s effectivness.
How many contract manufacturers do you have?

Agree with 2nd party audits and would be based on the outcome of your supplier & material risk assessment.
