Approved Chemical Usage

We do not allow for unapproved chemicals to be in the building. They need either CFIA or FDA approval or letter of no objection, and paperwork needs to be on file to show that. We don't just go off the sales rep said so, or its on the label (usually from China and "HAACP approved").

Does anyone else follow this same ruling? And what do you do when you a) cannot find a food safe / approved product and b) during full construction do you wave this requirement, or contractors need to give you a list of items they will be using.

Or does your rule JUST apply to anything within food contact? And if so how do you keep track of which chemicals in your facility are approved for use and which ones aren't approved for food contact use?

Thank you in advance.

And if anyone has PVC Primer and Cement that is approved - please pass on the name :)

We have a list on excel of our chemicals. The food grade chemicals are shown on the document and are separated from other chemicals in a cabinet in the locked cage with our sanitation chemicals. A list of the food grade chemicals is also listed on the cabinet.

In our maintenance room, we have a locked/fireproof cabinet for PCV Primer, etc that is used.

Along with the excel document, I have SDS documents for all of them in binders separated by use (maintenance, sanitation chemicals, bathroom cleaning chemicals, etc. For Food Defense purposes, the excel document is updated weekly. Also to check for anything new that might have been added by maintenance so the SDS book can be updated and checked for any potential allergens in the products.

try Oatey clear heavy duty and regular cement or  EZ-Weld 905,205,and 206 for PVC cement

NEW construction..........all bets are off.........unless of course you want to push the price of the job up 20%

Construction materials used to be governed by CFIA and that stopped about a decade ago

Unless someone is using something that is going to emit noxious gas for the next 2 years (and in Canada that is regulated by alot of other bodies) you need to let go on the new build and let the project manager handle that

NOW-when it comes to equipping the facility, that's different all together. At my PP we kept finding foreign material in FG when the area was commissioned...........I ask the project manager....are those surfaced cut resistant? (seems like a no brainer to me) turns out NO..........no one bothered to ask!!!

When i was in Canadian poultry-------did best to keep unapproved chems out altogether, but you can implement a strategy to keep approved and non separate just like you have separate direct food contact and indirect or incidental food contact surfaces and/or chemicals

And FYI--even chlorine is approved.....but you still need to follow the label.  I have attached the CFIA FSEP manual link.........i think you may like it and find it useful

And it would appear the Candian GFSI auditors particularly SQF, like this HACCP model........everyone is familiar with it and it is the one Meat, Dairy Eggs MUST follow
