Can a company perform a 2nd party audit similar to when an approved supplier is not audited by a 3rd party provided the reason is not due to a major food safety issue?

It depends on the risk assessment or the type of risk pertaining to the product that you are getting from that Approved supplier.

In general, if a company have determined that the risk is very low, some companies just satisfy with a self evaluated questionnaire, while some tend to inquire for a 2nd or 3rd party audit.

Based on the changes in auditing requirements (GFSI standards changes), it also depends on the type of standard/certification scheme that you are seeking.

PS: IMO The topic heading and the subject of the post is conflicting, as the heading says "if the supplier did not pass" while the post says " supplier was not audited by a 3rd party ", so did they failed the 3rd party audit or they were not audited by a 3rd party, please help my limited understanding  .

is there a specific Context ?

If your asking if your company can audit your supplier (Because they failed their 3rd party audit).., then the anwser is sure! If you feel thier is something that may be a major issue and you want to pay a visit yourself (Granted that your trained in the auditing techniques and thuer opertions).. Or if your THAT unsure of thier opertion then why not look elsewhere for suppliers? Like stated above it's all about risk..

Actually it would be a 1st party audit if the customer employee did the audit and a 2nd if you contract direct with an auditor or consultant to run the audit for you.

Many of our clients run their own audits on their suppliers.
