Are Latex Powdered Gloves allowed?
Good Morning folks!
Its a Monday of all Mondays today! Sorry if this topic is already covered but I couldn't find it.
We produce Pet treats and we are aiming for SQF & Costco certification as well as SFCR licence in a few months. I can't find info on the topic but I am sure I have read about it some where.
Are Latex gloves allowed?
Are Powdered gloves allowed?
I think the latex falls under an allergy concern, and the powder I'm just not sure but also feel it is would be an allergy concern.
I contacted the company requesting a LOA but nothing yet, on the box of gloves it states "Evaluated and accepted by CFIA for direct food contact". hrmmm....
Thanks for your input!!
Ok, so the latex is a big NO NO and you really don't want your employees to wear these as A LOT of people tend to have a reaction to the combination of latex/powder and end up with contact dermatitis that doesn't appear to be near as frequent with a nitrile or vinyl glove, never mind the allergen risk on top. Food processors haven't used latex as a rule for about 10 years (and they are expensive!!!)
If the box says evaluated by CFIA, then they probably were and you can check that here: it used to be that ALL of these products needed an evaluation performed by CFIA/Health Canada so it the glove hasn't changed at all in the last 20 or so years, it should be on the list

As for the powder, you'd have to find out just what it is made from, but generally speaking it's made from corn............so not really an allergen concern
in 6000 factory inspections over the lifetime I have seen Latex gloves about a handful of times.
The reason is lots of people have a reaction to them - like me.
Technically speaking the powder can be a contributing contaminate to food.
Inotherwords - don't do it.
I knew latex would be a issue, but the powder concerns me even more as there is no indication of what it is made with.
Latex isn't the norm here, it was a freebie that I found out on the floor. (Note to self: warn office staff about giving out freebies and PPE purchasing requirements)
Medical gloves are made of different polymers including latex, nitrile rubber, polyvinyl chloride and neoprene; they come unpowdered, or powdered with cornstarch to lubricate the gloves, making them easier to put on the hands.

FDA has banned powdered gloves in medicine due to the powder becoming air borne
