Hello, hope all is well with you. we have a trader joes audit coming up that will be conducted by sai global. they are requiring quite a bit of label verification records. I was wondering if you could assist me with some templates or suggestions on how to meet the requirements and minimize the records count that we will have to use.  Finished product, running products, beginning checks, etc.

My crew and I went through 8 versions to maximize column widths and make the form as easy to fill out as possible. Here it is:

We check labels upon proof approval with 3 knowledgeable people signing off on each critical element.  When the production run of labels is received, a sample of each is provided to QC to confirm (and initial) that they match exactly to the proof. The line operator then records the use of the label on their production sheet and a QC will verify the label to product accuracy at each break, also initialing the production sheet.  product is not released into distribution unless all checks are recorded.

Use any or all of these that may apply to your operation.

You can add label checks into operational records. These checks are designed to check:

(1) the right label is on the right product

(2) each product has a label

(3) quality standards.

From a food safety perspective, I recommend focusing on the verification process once the labels arrive, before they make it into storage.

Especially because it's retail and Trader Joes has a history of allergen misdeclarations,  I suggest adding these elements to the log:

  • Front Panel: USDA or other seals (if applicable), Weight
  • Back Panel: Nutritionals, Ingredients, Manufacturer Info, Allergens
  • Quantity Received
  • Lot Number
  • Item Name, Date Received

I keep one label from each SKU in a "Standards" binder, which is used to compare the new label against.

Each time you receive new labels, retain one of each label with your records.

Happy to help if you have additional questions!
