Supplier certification when importing vegetable oil from Canada to USA
Hello,
My company wants to import vegetable oil from Canada, the biggest question that I have is if the Canadian company is inspected and approved by CFIA do I need to ask for other certification like BRC or SQF,
Thank you!
As the customer, that's up to you!
CFIA will issue export paperwork if the Canadian company is working within the regulations that they are required too
I may be biased, but I believe Canadians products have a high safety level across the board! So a 3rd party audit may not be of much value to you
CFIA's certification is good, we recently changed our rules and regulation to better harmonize with the FDA!
However, I would still ask for a GFSI certification. Unless you deal with a broker that takes care of import, you would be responsible for the product in the USA (see FSVP -Foreign supplier verification program)
The GFSI certification would add a layer of safety and a bunch of the work would already be done by the supplier.
US and Canada have equivalent food inspection system.

So if the potential supplier is already exporting their products to the US, then they will have the process in place.
Just to add: you may also want to verify labeling requirements (e.g GMOs, this is not mandatory here in Canada)
