Re-conditioning worn down equipment

Hi all,

We have some old metal desktop cutting equipment that we are looking to try and re-condition for use again in our vegetable production area. The reason it is not currently in use is that the outer paint has eroded leaving lots of visible rust- is there anything that could be done by way of re-coating the rusty areas with a food grade paint or something like that? Would love to know your thoughts/experiences.

Kind regards,

Andy

Don't paint over the rusty areas - send it out to get it back down to bare metal using blast stripping if you can.

Is the painted surface actually food contact? (including potential incidental contact).

There are a number of options for "certified" "food safe" paints/coatings (broadly meaning that the manufacture confirms compliance with the EU food contact regs, although some seem to be a bit more vague - something to check in detail once you've lined up a few options), but the requirements will depend on the specifics of the application - temperature, composition of potential contact foods etc can have a bearing on what is/isn't suitable.

It's probably worth talking to a couple of specialist suppliers about the specific application.
