Which GFSI Standards(hazard analysis) include Radiological hazards

Hi all,

Which international standards mandate consideration of radiological hazards during hazard analysis (i.e. during HACCP studies)?

I know it is mandated in the BRC Global Food Standard Version 8, but unsure about FSSC22000, IFS and the rest....

Look forward to your replies,

Many thanks

The Prof

afaik, a Globally recognized International haccp standard does not exist.

Perhaps you can refine the scope of yr query ?

Hi Charles C,

My query relates to which of the widely used Standards mandate consideration of radiological hazards when conducting hazard analyses.  The Standards I have in mind are  specifically the most widely used Standards, i.e. BRC Food V8, IFS, FSSC 22000, SQF.  I hope this clarifies things a little.

I deduce you mean GFSI recognised FS Standards.

Yes Charles, GFSI recognised schemes is what I was thinking of...  Many thanks, The Prof

It is in BRC. Not sure about the other GFSI standards, but if you sell into the US, it is required under FSMA.

For FSMA the radiological hazard is part of the chemical hazard analysis.  At a seminar I went to, the FDA panel members went to great lengths to allay people's concerns about this requirement.  They gave the example of a firm using mineral spring water to make their product.  The FDA people said that since it was possible that a spring would have radon or other dissolved radioactive elements, it should be tested annually for that possibility.

In FSMA, even though radiological hazards are part of chemical hazards,a documented risk analysis for radiological hazards is important.

Hi Prof,

References to" radiological" in GFSI EIII  -recognised (Food) Standards

Seems to be 6 Food Standards -

(1) SQF8(Manufacturing) - Food defense section

(2) BRC8 - Hazard Analysis section

(3) FSSC22000-ver.5(ISO22000:2018) - Hazard Control Plan section

(4) IFS-ver.6.1 - Food Defense section (Most recent

(5) PrimusGFS-ver.2,1 - Not mentioned (Most recent ver.=3 but not found)

(6) Global Aquaculture Alliance Seafood - Seafood Processing Standard Issue 3 Not mentioned (most recent version = 5 but not found)

Seems only hazard analyses in (2,3) are mandated to include radiological (although 5,6 did not check latest version)

.

For BRCGS V8, radiological risk assessment is required as part of the HACCP plan. I've attached a screenshot to this post.
