Food Fraud required for Pet Food Manufacturing?
Hi all,
are the requirements for food fraud required for pet food manufactures.
Does FSMA require pet food manufactures to be compliant and have the necessary elements in place?
I know that SQF and BRC do require Food Fraud within their GFSI schemes, and SQF you can be exempt if you qualify.

Not my area, but this article by Dr. John Spink from MSU would indicate that it is required. Their site is one of the best sources of food fraud information out there.

I'm not sure if it's required by why would you not want to? If food fraud was found in petfood it could be equally damaging to a company.
It appears that animal food manufacturers are exempt from the "Final Rule for Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration" - see the exemptions section of the FDA's FSMA page on it here: https://www.fda.gov/...al-adulteration
Nonetheless I agree with the other posts - I can't really see why you wouldn't implement a suitable system, and could genuinely see a problem in this area causing more reputational damage than it would for human food.

If you are in any doubt Google melamine in petfood.
Economically motivated adulteration of wheat gluten (and rice gluten) in 2007 - 2008 resulted in the biggest recall in the history of the petfood industry. I have attached an article I wrote in 2017 that gives a brief resume of the melamine crisis and the need for an approach that is wider than only HACCP to keep our pets safe.
