What is the difference between food defence and food security?

I was wondering if there have a different between food defence and food security?

What's the context of the question?
The two terms are often used interchangeably, but food security is also sometimes used in the sense of ensuring ongoing availability of sufficient foodstuffs to feed the population (given the effects of population growth, climate change etc).

'Food Security' is nearly exclusively used to describe access and affordability to a regular supply of food. The term should not be used as a substitute for 'Food Defense'.

Must be a regional thing - I've lost count of the times I've been asked about our Food Security Plan by customers, and very definitely in the context of food defence ;)

As professionals, we should always use the correct term, regardless of customer ignorance.

Food safety refers to protecting the food supply from unintentional contamination because of pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, Campylobacter, and E. coli O157:H7 and chemical and physical hazards. Food defense refers to protecting the food supply from intentional contamination with chemical, biological, physical, or radiological agent and Food Fraud.Food defense activities can include implementing additional security measures to: reduce the risk of someone intentionally contaminating the food supply, and minimize the impact of an incident.Food Defense is VOLUNTARY. Businesses are not required to implement food defense measures. However, it is a best practice that further protects public health and the business brand. Food Defense in NOT voluntary for food manufacturers - both the USDA and FDA require some form of it. On the state/restaurant level - it is voluntary.  The article you sited is from 2014. Since that time the legislation the article was talking about - it's been passed. The final rule being issued in 2016.

I'd say food defense is a very US term.  US Manufacturers rarely use the term "HACCP" despite it being the correct term (and developed in the US) that the rest of the world are very happy using.  #Justsayin' :ejut:

Food Safety, HACCP, Food Defense = internal programs implemented by the manufacturer.

 

Food Security = external programs most likely implemented by government agencies or similar third parties.

Food defence - when security department think how to save product from different bad people who want damage the product in different ways and also to make impact to humans mental and physical health .

Food security -when security department only think how to save product and also different items of company from bad people who want to stole these things and company will lose money. The main aspect is - dont lose money in everyday life and to keep company's everyday life in calm order.
