Hi  Strawberry,

These are extremely wide topics.

You may need to narrow yr objective Scope somewhat to get useful input.

Hello Strawberry,

They are wide topics indeed. You could come at "food safety" from many directions. Which subject areas interest the most? I.e. you could be looking at the effect of a positive food culture training on the hygienic habits of a workforce from a psychological point of view, or the impact of product and process waste from an environmental point of view, or the effectiveness of a HACCP (based)  system on food manufacturing in various countries.

I'd recommend following your interests, it's a lengthy piece of work and can easily become rather tedious otherwise.

Just to clarify the difference between British and American use of "dissertation," are you talking about a PhD topic (American usage) or something else, i.e. an undergrad thesis? If the former, you should be able to talk to your dissertation adviser about potential topics. As someone who has done the process, I wouldn't recommend searching around on the internet for potential topics; you need something precise which builds upon prior scholarship and which has not been researched (in the same way) before. If it's the latter, then, yeah, you need to narrow your topic.

The question about product waste from an environmental point of view is interesting, as is the differences between HACCP systems in various countries. I wonder whether there is any data about what kind of "safety" is being emphasized as well, that is, "food safety" as defined by HACCP vs. environmental concerns from manufacturing practices that produce environmental damage or secondary pollution (i.e. heavy use of plastic that is being discarded and so forth).

Good luck.

Personally my current pet topic is food safety culture.  Loving looking at the behavioural side of food safety and it's a real growth area with manufacturers out there keen for someone to support.

You need to ask, "how will I get access to gobs and gobs of data?"  It will be difficult to collect data from private companies even if you work for them.  Surveys are expensive if done correctly.  Government data on, say, recalls won't be enough and is shoddy anyway.

Here's one suggestion -

What are the Pros/Cons from FSMA's New HACCP ?

Why has pathological contamination of food remained at the same level for the last 10-??? years despite an increase in food safety awareness and program implementation?
