What is the common practice for extending shelf life for products produced abroad and sold in the US?

My client still has stocks of a specific item, and is asking for extension.

It depends on the item. For us, we take it case by case. A lot of times, the supplier has done more shelf-life studies and could prove it. We require a document from them stating how long it can be extended with a signature - usually from their microbiologist, QC manager or something similar.

It is important to distinguish between safety concerns and quality concerns when writing the note extending the shelf life.

It depends on the item and shelf life extensions can be considered by the nature of the product both in terms of safety and quality.

shelf-life is always kept in consideration for the purposes of quality of the product and is usually goes with the statements "use before the specific date or by the specific date on the products." which means slightly different from each other. Products that are to be used before the specific dates are normally the ones shelf life is not expected to be extended due to both safety and quality concerns.

IIRC dates on retail products have no legal significance in USA. I suppose customers might care though. :smile:

 

A logical answer is that any extension should be validatably (a) safe or if the shelf -life is not safety-based then (b) similarly for "quality".
