BRC clause 4.3.4 - Battery Charging area

We have an area in the warehouse in which bagged product is located directly behind the chargers of the forklifts.  These are new chargers that don't really emit fumes, we have some fans in the area-would this be considered adequate ventillation to appease the standard?

You need a full barrier. Batteries contain a lot of not nice acids, chemicals etc

We have a contained system where the battery never leaves the forklift, the charges are just plug in at each break.  does this change anything?

I've always experience full barriers between food product and batteries on or near forklifts.

Things happen to batteries, leaks, explosions, etc.

Thus, whenever someone is putting in new battery operated systems etc we go for physical walls up.

Any time you are charging a forklift battery Hydrogen gas is produced, there can also be spillage of sulfuric acid if the batteries are over watered before a charge cycle whether they're in the truck or not. We were told solid barrier or a 15' clear separation. Ventilation directly above is always encouraged too.
