We have bird preventation policy and catch policy in case a bird got past exterior defenses but have not had a intruder issue here.

Not sure what a bird risk assessment looks like - others, yes, but not sure about this.

Hello people,

Anyone have an example of a bird risk assessment?

Thank you.

Monitor the roof, windows, doors and any other intentional/unintentional points of access.

(I once inspected a square factory which only had 3 walls - the result was unsurprising)

Monitoring of entry/exit routes and effective usage of air/split curtains stops the entry of birds. Also proper waste management system helps to avoid accumulation of bird near to food premises.

I have a pest control risk assessment if it is any help

Re Bird Risk Assessment -

Birds should be considered as part of the overall 'Pest Risk Assessment' for your site;

  • Does the site location increase the risk of bird activity e.g. are you near the coast or near a waste site with lots of gulls on it /an animal feed mill with pigeons
  • Does the type of building your site occupies make it attractive to birds for nesting or roosting (including swallows etc); flat roofs /ledges/ loading canopies
  • Do your site processes and waste management increase the risk of attracting birds; extracted product expelled onto the roof/ open waste skips/ food spillages
  • Do birds frequent the site - including robins etc
  • Does your door policy/ forklift use mean there is the potential for birds to enter (sparrows have been reported riding in on forklift trucks and starlings waiting for an auto-door to open to allow them to walk in)

If the answers are 'yes' and you (or your pest contractor) identify that there is a risk of bird activity impacting your operation, what practical measures can be taken to reduce the risk?

Your Pest control contractor should be doing this for you.

and I hope you don't have Seagulls....... bane of my life...

They don't enter the facilities but they poop everywhere and are generally delinquent...

Afai can see, BRC8 has no specific requirement for a risk assessment for birds.

As per previous post, yr contractor should be able to provide a pest risk assessment/consequential agreed frequency. One procedure is detailed on the attached file which was developed for BRC7.

BRC7 - risk assessment for pest control.pdf   408.82KB   220 downloads

Clause 4.14.7:

The site shall have adequate measures in place to prevent birds from entering buildings or roosting above
loading or unloading areas.

From Interpretation Guidelines:

Interpretation Birds
The site (or its pest management contractor) should use a risk assessment approach to establish whether
there is any potential for the ingress of birds, or for roosting and nesting at loading or unloading areas, and to
assess the measures required to mitigate the risk.
The expectation here is not necessarily to rebuild or reconfigure facilities; instead, the intention is to
recognise any potential problems and take steps to remove or mitigate these risks from birds.

I'm wondering if the OP is referring to the above clause focusing on birds which does mention RA in the IG. That said, as we know the IG is not strictly audited against and the clause doesn't specifically require a RA dedicated to birds. As with other comments above, I'd expect this to be covered in you general pest assessment, and controls for birds implemented where needed.

I used to work at a meat processing place right on the coast - edge of site met the beach - the seagulls were less than co-operative!
