Can we allow Gatorade for employees on the production floor if we are allergen free?
Our facility is allergen free. Can we allowed Gatorade for employees to drink on the production floor? Will I need to perform an risk assessment?
Hi Mrs Powell
Drinking or eating on production floor, irrespective of allergen content is not recommended in open food processing areas. I would say it's strongly discouraged!
If employees need to have a drink and cannot access a rest room for whatever reason, then I would install a fountain at the entrance of manufacturing area so they can have a drink and not take their drink on the production floor/lines.

You need to do risk assessment to evaluate the potential for contamination, including allergens, chemicals, foreign matter, etc.

Only in the US guys... water only if needed. Nobody "needs" to drink Gatorade in production.
We have water fountains. I do not agree with it either just a rock in a hard place I guess. Thanks for everyone input.
Think about what if you get Gatorade in your product, even though it doesn't contain allergens? There's more than just allergen risk to worry about...labeling compliance, GMP's, cross contamination.
We allow only water in sealed bottles.
Water only in approved, clear, sealed containers. Gatorade is effectively a food substance (Sugar, salt, dyes etc.) and if your system prohibits food in production areas (which it should) it can't be allowed. We provide Gatorade available in the break area ONLY.
I was also put in a hard spot with this situation.
Staff wanted Gatorade, I saw a lot of risks with having it out, drinking it, and then hygiene of returning back to work.
Employees will also ultimately spill said Gatorade (small drops or big spills), and then you have a potential for increased pest activity in the area.
Not worth it.

And be thorough in your risk assessment. I have worked for a facility where I was acting practitioner at one location and back-up at another (an hour away). The risk assessment showed little to no risk at one facility (manufacturing closed loop system), but an unacceptable level of risk at the other (bagging/screening/packaging). We allowed only company provided Gatorade/poweraide or water at this location, and only in approved containers (clear non-brittle plastic). At the packaging facility, employees were required to leave the floor and take a break for re-hydration. Them's the breaks.
Anyone else thinking "Idiocracy" where is it Mountain Dew they're watering the crops with?

But Brawndo has what plants crave. It has electrolytes.

I am really concerned how perilously close we are to "Idiocracy".
Some of the things I have had to explain (UNWRAPPED means without a wrapper), make me genuinely frightened
Why come you don't have a tattoo? I love that movie....
We don't allow any glass or plastic on the floor whatsoever, nor eating and drinking anywhere but the break/lunch room. If I so much as find a wrapper in the trash in the production room from food or drink I go nuts-o on staff.

Didn't say I didn't like it, I just do NOT want to LIVE IT.
