Small company with high pay or large company with low pay?

Hi everyone, It's dilemma time again. I am currently working as a QA supervisor/HACCP Coordinator in a small food company now, the pay is higher than market value. The job duties is challenging and I like it. However, the micromanagement from the owner makes me sick and scared to come to work everyday, even cannot fall asleep, since you never know when is your timing to be targeted and get kicked out from the door (There have been 6 employees got kicked out with objective and insanely made-up reasons since I started working 1.5 years ago). Now, there is one job offer from a large corporate I wish to join long time ago but with lower position and of course lower pay than what I am earning (less 15,000 annum). The large corporate can provide more opportunity to grow and learning and is also stable and systematic. I am struggling which is the correct way to go. Any input?

My thoughts--Micromanaging is a nightmare. 

Stability is nothing to sneeze at.

My experiences have always been opposite of that.   Larger companies pay more but you get that terrible corporate styled workplace and vibe.  Very cookie-cutter feeling.   I work for a smaller family owned place now, and I love it, but the owner is a good guy, and he trusts me to handle my end of things, and doesn't stick his nose in at all unless I need him for something.  I have a friend that works for Kellogg in Battle Creek MI, and they absolutely hate the place, an absolute corporate nightmare of a job.   I guess it's subjective and different people like different scenarios.

It sound to me like your mind is already made up, but I'll say this:   A terrible boss/owner makes a career unbearable.   And if he isn't going anywhere, maybe you should.

I went from a small company to a larger company. I don't regret it. My previous job was also causing a lot of stress. I have more responsibility and work more hours however, I have more management support.

You may start out at a lower position but larger companies have more opportunities to move up.

 

What about benefits - I've taken a lower paying job however the increased benefits made up for the loss of income.

 

Plus the stress you're in - it isn't worth it.

My brother asked his football coach in high school what he should do for a living when he got older, and his coach gave what I thought quite sagely advice, saying:

"Son, life sucks no matter what job you do.   Go for the money."

Good call coach, lol.

It's definitely subjective and you should make a decision on your own. Speaking of preferences coming from company size - I've worked for 4 small companies, all family-owned, and experienced different attitude to food safety and myself. I've left 2 of them: one company's owners (father and 4 sons) had terrible negligence to food safety/hygiene rules, another company's owner was an unbearable person. I've stayed finally with two companies with owners being nice persons caring about food safety and me:) Good luck! 

This sounds just like a spot I was in back in my mid 20s. For my age, I was making great $$. I only am just now approaching it in my early 40s in the food industry over 15 years later.

It was also the worst job, hands down, that I've ever had and the job by which I measure all others. I would wake up nights, stressing about work. I would spend 70 hours typically (sometimes more) at the dealership, dealing with yelling angry customers and a half drunk boss with self esteem issues. It was killing my health (ulcers, BP, you name it). The feeling I had when I left there, as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders, made me realize I would never again stay at a job with those conditions, regardless of the pay.

RUN, your health is more important than 15 grand a year. Your health is more important then any money, within reason.

 

Edit: changed short man syndrome to self esteem issues. Thought about it a bit and realized that might be an offensive term to some :X
