We are a co-packer of secondary packaging. Recently awarded project of sealed snack bars into corrugate box...ALLERGEN & ORGANIC ITEMS!  Only familiar with Charm ATP pocketswabs and AllerGiene for clean surface verification, what other options out there to consider? Thank you all.

My facility uses Hygiena products:

  • UltraSnap Swabs with a SystemSURE Plus - ATP
  • AllerSnap Swabs with a dry block incubator - Protein Residue Test

Hygiena is nice--comes with desktop software to track and trend

The new 3M unit is the size of a smart phone (and I have had better support with 3M)

Neogen allergen indicator system (rapid result have only used egg and mustard)

ATP - I've used Hygiene for a few years and had no issues with them, very user friendly. I've recently joined a new place where 3M is used, from what I've seen so far it's equally effective as far as the sampling goes. I've had some technical and log in issues, but that might be just me!

Allergen - Using Neogen at the moment, relatively simple and effective. Must admit I found the Romer Labs rapid tests slightly better but that's only minor; having the extraction buffer in a dripbottle than individual sachets kept things a bit neater.

We use Hygiene ATP as well; it's very user friendly (although adding or changing locations can be a bit of a pain after you've already set them up), and the trending software is helpful.

We also use the InSite Salmonella and Listeria tests with a small dry block incubator along with AllerSnap: no problems to mention.

Hi mp45,

I must echo Zanorias, we prefer use of Romer Labs agra-strips having used Neogen in the past.

I will say to swab pre-clean to show the allergen is there, then swab post clean to show the allergen can be removed.

If your product does not come into contact with surfaces, i.e. remains in packaging, then you may not need to be carrying out allergen removal validation.

yes, the hope is the item always stays intact in primary sealed wrap. But what if package does expose? (broken wrapper, equipment failure..)

want to assure equipment is always safe to produce non-allergen. Thoughts?

Thank you

Reject, segregate and investigate.

Random testing if RA is low probability of contamination.
