Food Packaging advice for a new product

For the past 6 months I've had an idea (dream) to produce a good that to be packaged then sold in retail places like gas stations and grocery stores. With experience in cooking but little in distribution I'm very nervous about the packaging process and how it works and how much it can cost. I'm not trying to create an elaborate package here. I just want something that can hold a dry good (cup or box of some kind) and something that can hold a sauce (I imagine a package similar to yogurt). Has anyone here had experience with distribution or packaging of any kind of good that would mind giving some incite into what it takes, how much it costs to get started, and obstacles to be aware of or mistakes you made. Thank you for any help you may have even if it's DON'T Do IT!

We used to pack yogurts with cereals in domes: a cup with yogurt, sealed, with a plastic "dome" (also sealed on the bottom) on the top containing dry cereals. You could see similar ones at Starbucks, I guess. However, I have no info RE: costs and other financial info as my area of expertise is QA. Sorry:)

I have worked at a place that makes the things as described by olenazh (above) Huhtamaki Ltd. you could approach them of similar to ask about price. We sold by the pallet say 40,000 units but they may be able to put you onto a distributor of smaller quantities and price. Is the product ambient?

It will depend on the food safety controls that will be required for your product idea. Since you are new to commercializing a food product (i.e. taking a product that you make in the kitchen and scale it up to sell everywhere), you would be best to find a Co Manufacturer (contract packager, etc...) who is in the business of making similar type products for other companies. This way, you can rely on their expertise and guidance to pursue this idea thoroughly and with the proper food safely controls that will be required for your exact type of product (s). Good luck!
